Essential Oils seem to be a buzz word right now, is it just a fad?
No! In fact, what we know from the Egyptian hieroglyphics and Chinese manuscripts is that physicians and priests have used essential oils for thousands of years.
In egypt, there were temples specifically used for the production and blending of the oils, and the recipes were then recorded on the walls in hieroglyphics. Essential oils were also used in the embalming process. When King Tut's tomb was opened in 1922, about 50 alabaster jars made to hold 350 liters of oils were discovered. Almost all of the oils had been robbed by tomb raiders leaving the empty jars behind.
The Romans diffused essential oils to purify their temples and political buildings. They also used aromatics in their steam baths to maintain health.
Did you know there are 188 references to essential oils in the Bible? We've all heard about the 3 Wise Men bringing Frankincense and Myrrh to the Christ child, but there are many more references. Oils were used for health, anointing, and for aroma. Some of the aromatics mentioned were frankincense, myrrh, galbanum, cinnamon, cassia, rosemary, hyssop, and spikenard.
It wasn't until the late 19th and early 20th centuries that essential oils were rediscovered. Civilian and military hospitals began using aromatic essences during World War 1.
No matter what, oils are here to stay. They have been and always will be one of nature's tools to support the body. I happened to learn about essential oils long before the craze, but didn't seriously dive in until about 2013. It's fun learning how essential oils support your health!
What are Essential Oils?
Essential oils are the volatile liquids that are distilled from plants. Depending on the different plant oils can be distilled from seeds, bark, leaves, stems, roots, flowers, or fruit. Their chemistry is very complex and may contain hundreds of unique compounds. They are highly concentrated and considerably more potent than dried herbs.
Unlike vegetable oils like olive oil, they are not greasy and do not clog pores. Also, vegetable oils can go rancid over time due to oxidation, but high quality essential oils do not go bad and do not expire.
What are the benefits?
Essential oils are molecularly small, so they penetrate the skin quickly and can reach every cell in your body within 20 minutes!
Essential oils may also have the following benefits:
- Support immune function
- Aid in maintaing normal cellular regeneration
- High in antioxidants
- Are oxygenating
- Support the body's natural defenses
- Supports the body's natural detoxification process
- Air purification through diffusion
- Promote emotional, physical, and spiritual well being
- Restoring the body to its natural balance
- Mood elevating
- Helps you relax
- Helps manage stress and frustration

It might be hard to understand how one thing can have so many profiles, but as a mom I know I have to be many things at one time. I'm a mom and a wife, personal chef and shopper, maid, chauffeur, nurse and kisser of the boo boos, extraordinary storyteller, late night milk machine, ect. You get the picture. As a mom, we have adapted to serve many purposes to meet the needs and demands of our families. Essential oils are the "lifeblood" of the plant and can serve many purposes in the plant's health as well as ours.
Does Quality Matter?
First, I want to say that I will not allow any "oil bashing" or talking down of this or that company on this website or my Facebook page. I'm saddened by all the effort and time spent on negative thoughts towards one another or Company X. I went into my oil journey open minded and not biased one way or the other. I wasn't personally affiliated with anyone and wasn't "talked" into anything.
I'm a researcher by nature and set out to find out on my own what was right for my family. I found a few things that concerned me about some of the companies, but I won't speak about that here. I want to focus on why I chose Young Living and why quality matters.
High quality essential oils are harder to come by because of the price first of all. Producing the purest of oils may require several hundred pounds, or even several thousand pounds, of plant material to yield one pound of pure essential oils. For example, one pound of pure melissa oils sells between $9,000-$15,000. It's this high because 3 tons of that plant material is required to produce a single pound of oil.
Since most of the oils produced around the world are used the perfume industry, the oils are being purchased for only their aromatic qualities. To produce large amounts of oil quickly, some improper practices may be used during distillation such as high temperatures, high pressure, rapid processing, and chemical solvents. As a result, these oils may smell good but lack the chemical constituents that produce the powerful therapeutic results we know and hear about.
Today, ninety-eight percent of essential oil volume produced is used for the cosmetic and perfume industry. Only about two percent of essential oils distilled or extracted across the world are for therapeutic and medicinal application.
I urge you, whatever you choose, do your research and know the difference. Buying oils at a health food store may be cheaper but it could be adulterated and likely won't produce the results. I frankly would not use them on my family, especially my precious children.
Why I Chose Young Living
Young Living was started by Gary Young. He comes from a family line of farmers and knew he always wanted to farm something. It all started when he started his own organic herb farming and distillation operation in the 1993. Although he was already familiar with the effects of essential oils, he was disturbed that the quality of oils varied greatly.
From the start he knew he wanted to produce the highest quality essential oils in the world, so he went to France and studied under the 2 most famous oil distillers in the world (he was their only student). Over 20 years later and Young Living is the world leader in Essential Oils and their practices remain the same for all of their farms.
I really like how open YL is about their farming practices and the locations of their farms. I know when I buy meat for my family, I like knowing where it comes from. This was the first thing that attracted me, the information was out in the open and clear to find. If you call customer service, they are knowledgeable about the Company, if they aren't sure, they will find someone who is. In addition, here are a few things about YL that I found to support my decision:
- They use ALL organic practices on all their farms. No chemicals, pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers. They rely on natural means to condition the soil like planting alfalfa which is rich in nitrogen, and composting the un used materials ( they compost over 300 tons a year!). Also, they use essential oils as a natural bug spray.
- They take great care in growing the plant. Plants are grown from the original seed stock and not from hybrids! This is very important because to get an oil with many constituents all the plants should not have all the same properties. They also hand weed (I can barely keep up with my yard)
- They own 11 of their own farms around the world and adding more! They oversee each aspect from the seed to the bottle. No brokers! In fact, their farm in Utah is open to the public. You can take a tour and even see what it's like to harvest a plant. Harvesting is open to ALL Young Living members. I love that! Young Living also has some CO-OP farms where due to location they can't own the land, but they work very closely with these farms.
- Testing. YL has labs that perform rigorous tests on all of their oils, if it doesn't meet their high standards they throw it out! They also have third party testing done as well. You can read more about their specific testing procedures in the Essential Oils Desk Reference.
- Seed to Seal guarantee. The only company that offers this!
How I got Started
The first essential oil I ever used was Thieves. My mom first told me about it when I was first married because I was looking for a natural replacement for synthetic air fresheners. They gave me terrible migraines and when I found out they contained many chemicals and toxins, I decided to start detoxing our home. So, I started diffusing thieves and we loved it! It smelled like Christmas and my husband and I both were happy.
It wasn't until about 2013 that I started learning more about how essential oils can support and maintain your health. I quickly found that there was quite a bit of misinformation about oils and how to use them. So, I soon started teaching free education classes on health and essential oil safety. From there my journey began and my personal use turned into a passion to help others.
Sharing from the Heart
I have a passion for health and helping others, so naturally this was a good fit for me. I didn't set out to have a "business," I just wanted to share with others what i had learned on my journey. My first priority will always be to help others first!
Some people ask why can't you buy the oils directly from Young Living? YL has created a business model in which you need to purchase oils from a distributor. One main reason for this is because of the knowledge and support. If you bought the Premium kIt with 11 essential oils and it was delivered to your door today, would you know what to do with them? Maybe, but most people benefit from having a support of people that can guide them on how and what to use. Distributors often host free classes, calls, webinars, and more to help others learn about how to use essential oils.
I'm not here to talk anyone into anything. I'm here to share my story and the business is a bonus. I am thankful to God for the opportunity to have my own business and be able to stay home with my son. I left my job to be home with him after he was born, and while it made things a little harder, I wouldn't change it for the world. It allows me to do something I'm passionate about while being home with my with my son.
So, while I may not have a brick in mortar store, I'm a small business owner just like your favorite clothing or retail store. I've also had wonderful support from my team and leaders. There is wealth of shared experience and knowledge to pull from and I'm blessed to be a part of such an amazing team of health practitioners, bloggers, and moms. Thank you for allowing me to serve you and help you on this journey.
Remember, there is no obligation to sell but if you are interested in becoming a part of my business team contact me or visit our team website here. We will support you with the tools and resources to jump start your business. We offer many resources including our private Facebook learning community, and free business training. Our team also offer free classes each month online so you can continue to learn at your own pace.
